We cannot escape this simple fact: every era is shaped by time and historical circumstances. This is so from Washington to Trump, and will always be true. Thus this moment provides those engaged—those not sleeping—with an extraordinary opportunity to imagine a different future. As Toni Morrison said, ‘it is during times like these when artist go to work.’

It is within this context that I present 250 and Change, a traveling exhibition, where I ask 50 artists each representing one of the 50 states in the union to design monuments for the future.”
